100 Tiny Things

A hungry caterpillar

  • What has happened here?
  • Is the caterpillar alone? Are there more?
  • Do you think the caterpillar will eat more of the leaf?

Beware: Dragons

  • What is happening here?
  • Does this cave belong to one dragon? Is it the dragon whose tail we can see?
  • Draw/describe the inside of the cave. What do you imagine the inside looks/smells/sounds like?
  • Write an explorer’s diary entry following the discovery of this cave.

Zeus, Sweet Zeus

  • What can Zeus see from his candy floss cloud?
  • Why is he holding lightning bolts?
  • What powers does he have?
  • Who believed in Zeus?
  • Find out more about Zeus and the other Greek gods.

The Tree of Life

  • What type of tree is this?
  • Where can it be found?
  • Who put the tiny tyre swing on this tree? Who uses it?
  • Write from the perspective of the tree. How long has it been here? What changes has it seen?

Deep Blue

  • What is happening here?
  • How would you describe the pool? Consider the shape, the colour and the way light reflects off the ‘water’. Try using the colour thesaurus for more ideas.
  • Describe the water using a simile (‘like’ or ‘… as …’). Try not to go for the obvious choices!

School/key stage challenge: write 100 tiny stories (make miniature books, hide stories inside matchboxes or tiny bottles, or have a word limit). Create a big display of your little stories!
